A Systematic Review on Occupational Noise Among the Sailors: Measurement, Standards, and Control

This literature review aims to provide an up-to-date literature review and evaluation of the evidence base that compares occupational noise measurements on ships, standards, and noise control recommendations. This study consisted of literature from multiple databases, including Scopus, Pubmed, Web of Science, Ebsco Host, and Science Direct. We followed to the PRISMA guidelines to review papers from 1987 to 2022. We discovered 401 articles, which 30 of them were chosen for this review paper. A Sound Level Meter and/or Dosimeter can be used to measure noise levels on fishing boats, ferryboats, navy vessels, container ships, and floating storage and offloading vessels (FSO). The shipyards must also carry out noise measurements to determine noise exposure in ship life. Task-based measurement (TBM), full-day measurement (FDM), and the job-based method (JBM) are the available noise measurement techniques. The simplified International Maritime Organization (sIMO) method suggested by ISO 9612 can also be applied to measure levels of noise on big commercial ships. It provides recommendations for noise control efforts, including elimination, substitution, engineering, administration, and ear protection, based on international regulations.
