Some provide project and process structures, while others are formulated as methods to support specific process steps or describe mindsets that are recommended as essential when addressing complex problems through design. This chapter provides a structured overview of recommended mindsets, methods and processes for design and development. The chapter considers approaches for design as a general approach for addressing problems across application domains, alongside approaches that are focused more specifically on engineering design and those that address the design and development of complex systems. Overall, this chapter conveys some of the main schools of thought regarding how design and development should be done and clarifies some of the relationships between the approaches presented.
