LNS for DNN Architectures

This chapter discusses the Logarithmic number system (LNS). LNS is proposed as an alternative to conventional number representations to benefit from logarithm operation characteristics in implementing efficient hardware for costly arithmetic operations, such as multiplication which is massively required for DNNs. The chapter explains the proposals for LNS-based DNNs architectures and classifies them. Different classes are widely discussed and the challenges associated with each architecture are highlighted. The solutions presented so far for these challenges are spotlighted in this chapter as well.
