AI-Native Air Interface

In this chapter, we explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI) as a key technology in the next generation of mobile communications. AI can utilize the predictive power of data to enhance the performance and complexity of the air interface. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project Release 18 is currently studying the implementation of the AI-native air interface. We begin by discussing the background of incorporating AI into the air interface and then classify AI-native algorithms into two categories: end-to-end communications and single-module enhancement. To provide an example, we examine existing works using channel state information feedback, such as neural network architecture design, expert knowledge exploitation, and joint design. Additionally, we address the challenges in implementing the AI-native air interface.
