Advanced Channel Coding for 6G

In this chapter, we discuss the advancement of channel coding for 6G wireless communications. First, we retrospect the history of channel coding application in the past wireless communication systems, such as 3G-5G, and predict the main challenges in 6G systems, e.g., low latency, ultra-high reliability, and high performance. Then, we introduce the basic principle of polar codes and demonstrate that the optimized polar codes will become a powerful channel code to fulfill the requirements of low latency and high reliability in the future 6G systems. On the other hand, we also focus on the channel decoding based on deep learning due to its potential advantage on the high performance. Some typical decoding algorithms, such as neural belief propagation decoding and neural min-sum decoding, are investigated and evaluated. Finally, we summarize the chapter and point out the direction of channel coding in 6G.
