Introduction

The study of plastic deformation of metals requires both the science of solid mechanicsSolid mechanics and the materials science of lattice defectsMaterials science of lattice defects in crystals, and mathematical modelling of the physical elementary processes of plastic deformation serves as a link between the two. In this chapter, we briefly review the history of this research until now and indicate the direction of this book.
