Assemblage by Necessity: The Maritime Sculpture of Moath al-Alwi

Artist Gail Rothschild situates Moath’s ship sculptures in the context of artistic genres and movements from diverse cultures and time periods, including prison art, maritime art, intuitive or “outsider” art, and mixed-media assemblage, finding synergies from many quarters with Moath’s practice, aesthetic, and artwork. Foregrounding recognition and imagination as she places his ships in conversation with other artists and genres facing other circumstances in other times, Rothschild illuminates the transformative nature of Moath’s work and the making of it.
