Artmaking at Guantánamo: A Ship Expresses Rescue

In this testimonial essay, detainee Moath al-Alwi discusses how he creates art and what it means to him in the context of his indefinite detention without charge and conditions of extremity inside Guantánamo. Reflecting on solitary confinement, prison raids, and his hunger strikes as well as how artwork forges community and offers imaginative freedom, he explains the process of converting prison materials and detritus into intricate, dynamic model ships, and describes some of his more recent paintings.
