Children in Context: Lessons for All Archaeologists from a Historic Perspective

This collection of historic archaeology articles offers lessons for both prehistoric and historic archaeologists. The articles illustrate the impossibility of discussing childhood without taking into account the intertwining of adult and child into a single cultural system. Adults and children live in the same historic milieu and affect and are affected by the same social and material circumstances. Children are relevant to all topics and all topics are relevant to children. The chapters demonstrate the need to take into account fine-grained differences in place, time, and social category that are sometimes elided by historic archaeologists and routinely by prehistoric scholars.
