Adaptation of the Doughnut Economics Model to a Rural Community in Germany

Humanity is putting persistent pressure on the Earth systems, leading to irreversible environmental consequences. Combining the planetary boundaries framework and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the doughnut economy provides an excellent model to develop a guideline helping the food supply chain become more sustainable. A combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods were applied to a rural community in Germany. Our case study shows that the required systems’ transformation is complex and requires time. All stakeholders need to be involved and actively participate. Our recommendations promote a transition towards a circular economy, a predominantly plant-based diet and an intensive education of residents. Nevertheless, a differentiated approach is needed, as the doughnut economy relies on many indicators that are only readily available in cities and require more developed infrastructure.
