Tori Removal: An Overview

Tori, commonly found in the oral cavity, are benign bony protrusions that often manifest as torus palatinus (TP), torus mandibularis (TM), and, less frequently, torus maxillaris. The etiology of these growths is attributed to a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors, such as mechanical stress from mastication and nutritional aspects. TP, the most prevalent form, typically occurs in females, while TM is more common in males and often bilateral. Surgical removal of tori is warranted in cases where they interfere with oral functions, such as speech, or complicate prosthodontic procedures. The surgical approach varies according to torus size and location, involving local anesthesia, precise incision, and flap design. Techniques for bone removal include the use of chisels, burs, or piezoelectric devices, with postoperative care focusing on hemostasis, pain management, and oral hygiene. Complications, including nerve damage and infection, are minimized through meticulous surgical technique and postoperative monitoring. The findings emphasize the importance of individualized treatment plans in tori removal for successful outcomes.
