Tongue Reconstruction

The reconstruction of tongue defects poses a significant challenge due to the organ’s intricate anatomy and multitude of functions. There are a variety of reconstructive options with differing benefits dependent upon the specific defect and needs of the patient. This chapter provides an overview of various reconstructive techniques, including primary closure, healing by secondary intention, skin grafting, regional flaps, and free flaps. Factors influencing the choice of reconstruction, such as defect size, location, and patient comorbidities, are discussed. Case presentations illustrate the application of the different modalities in clinical practice. Additionally, pitfalls and future directions in tongue reconstruction are reviewed, emphasizing the need for innovative approaches to address functional deficits and optimize patient outcomes.
