Orthodontics in Cleft Patients
摘要
Cleft lip is the most prevalent congenital anomaly associated with or without cleft palate that impacts the maxillofacial region. These conditions significantly diminish the quality of life for both the affected individual and their parents. It can occur individually or in several permutations. Cleft deformities are often associated with over 300 recognized illnesses. The cleft lip/palate deformity leads to multiple and wide social disadvantages, such as difficulties in breastfeeding and consequent inadequate growth, speech abnormalities and impairment, blockage, hearing loss, misalignment of teeth, significant facial deformity, and severe functional, psychological, and sociological problems. A wide range of experts are engaged in treatment methods, such as speech therapists, orthodontists, maxillofacial and plastic surgeons, anesthetists, orthodontists, restorative dentists, pediatric dentists, prosthodontists, ENT surgeons, and dentists. The optimal course of action is contingent upon the age of the patient and the precise location of the lesion. Patients reporting with cleft lip/palate malformation should now undergo treatment modalities based on an established procedure after diagnosis as this approach is now widely acknowledged and followed. Two factors contribute to this. Firstly, adhering to a consistent timetable reduces the necessity for superfluous “touch-up” procedures, which offer minimal benefits. Having a uniform protocol enables the thorough examination of all aspects of cleft care delivery, allowing for the evaluation and refinement of care for future generations of cleft children. This serves as a great tool for improvement.
