Otoplasty

In 1881 Edward Ely, an otolaryngologist at the Ear, Nose, and Throat Hospital in Manhattan, NY, published a case report describing a technique removing a through and through section of the auricle and allowing healing by secondary intention of the anterior aspect. Subsequently, many authors published similar and named techniques for cosmetic correction of the prominent ears. (2) However, the most widely cited techniques still in use today are those published by Mustarde in 1965 and Furnas in 1968, describing techniques for posteriorly suturing the cartilage without weakening the integrity of the auricle. (3) In this chapter, we describe the applications of these initial techniques as the basis for current methods of otoplasty for prominauris, as well as the surgical steps and complications for the surgical treatment of prominauris.
