Dental Implants and Systemic Diseases

Dental implants, since their development, have become a standard procedure for rehabilitating cases with fully edentulous jaws or single missing teeth. Hence, determining the aspects affecting the process of osseointegration is significantly essential. Nowadays, partial and complete edentulism is more prevalent among elderlies, and on the other hand, dental implant surgery for reconstructing missed teeth may be more required in this group. Since some systemic and local factors could be contraindications to dental implant therapy, evaluating the patient’s medical history is most important in considering any diagnosed/undiagnosed medical conditions to reduce the risk of implant failure and its complications. It has been reported that dental implant therapy has few absolute medical contraindications; however, some diseases can increase the probability of treatment failure or complications. Since there is still no consensus regarding the effect of various systematic conditions on the success and failure rates of dental implant surgery, we aimed to study available investigations to conclude. Compared to the disorder’s nature, systemic disease control is more critical. Individualized medical management is necessary before implant therapy because, in several patients, the functional benefits of dental implants and quality of life can outweigh the risks.
