Complementary Surgical Procedure for Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery is a complex procedure that involves the surgical manipulation of the maxillary and mandibular bones to correct skeletal malocclusions and improve facial aesthetics. Despite its high precision, it is not without potential complications. This chapter explores the impact of different surgical techniques on the soft tissue profile, often referred to as complementary surgical procedures, which can greatly influence the final aesthetic and functional outcome of the surgery. The chapter discusses several complementary procedures such as submental liposuction, botulinum injection for preventing postoperative complications, paranasal augmentation, the use of a condyle repositioning device, myotomy, and bone grafting. Each section provides a detailed overview of the procedure, its purpose, benefits, potential complications, and relevant research findings. Submental liposuction and paranasal augmentation are highlighted for their significant contributions to improving aesthetic outcomes. The use of a condyle repositioning device and myotomy is discussed in the context of reducing postoperative relapse and managing obstructive sleep apnea. Bone grafting is presented as a crucial procedure for improving aesthetics and postoperative positional stability, particularly in cases of cleft alveolus or to prevent condyle sag.
