  • Seong-Gon Kim

摘要

Orthognathic surgery, particularly maxillomandibular advancement (MMA), has emerged as an effective surgical treatment for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This chapter provides an overview of orthognathic surgery for sleep apnea, covering its introduction, understanding sleep apnea, surgical procedure details, benefits and risks, patient selection and considerations, current research and advancements, future directions, and a concluding summary. The chapter highlights the importance of treating sleep apnea and presents various treatment options available. It explains how orthognathic surgery, by repositioning the jaw bones, can alleviate upper airway obstruction and improve breathing during sleep. The benefits of orthognathic surgery include a reduction in apnea episodes and improvements in quality of life. However, the surgery carries potential risks and complications that must be carefully considered. Patient selection criteria and preoperative/postoperative considerations are discussed to ensure successful outcomes. The chapter explores current research and advancements in orthognathic surgery for sleep apnea, such as technological innovations and personalized treatment approaches. It also highlights future directions, including minimally invasive techniques and the combination of orthognathic surgery with other treatment modalities.
