Biology of Bone Regeneration

Implant dentistry has come a long way in recent years, with new techniques and technologies making it easier than ever to replace missing teeth. However, sometimes there is not enough bone in the jaw to support an implant. In these cases, ridge augmentation techniques can be used to build up the bone and create a strong foundation for the implant. In a retrospective study (Bornstein et al. 2008), it was determined that replacing a single tooth was the most encountered reason for the implant placement treatment, exceeding 50%. Additionally, in over half of the observed cases, further bone augmentation was deemed necessary. The comprehension of bone regeneration’s biological intricacies enables dental surgeons to effectively accomplish their desired objectives in bone augmenting procedures. There is an array of augmentation techniques that may be utilized, each tailored to the specific type of bone deficiency at hand; however, the fundamental principle remains constant.
