Breaking the Glass Ceiling: Navigating the Position and Challenges Faced by Women in the IT Industry

Any development if it has to be effective and sustainable for a long term it must consider the needs of all the people including of the ones who do not typically have a voice in decision making, be it at any level. This brings us to understanding how gender equality becomes an important component in achieving sustainable development. The present study analyses the status of women and major challenges faced by women in IT industry in India. Women, who make up about half of the population, have an important role both inside and outside the house. As a result, the growth of women's potential is related to humanity's future. Gender inequality is a fundamental issue that puts women at a disadvantage, stifling economic development and societal progress. Gender equality helps to reduce income inequality and increase economic diversification, which strengthens economic resilience. Gender equality is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set forward by the United Nations, which serve as a road map for eradicating poverty, safeguarding the environment, and guaranteeing that all people live in peace and prosperity. As per this study gender bias continues to be a significant impediment to women's success in the tech industry. Gender pay-gap prevails in IT industry in India. Female experienced least wage disparity in 2015 in IT industry in India. Female experienced highest wage disparity or gender pay-gap in 2016 wherein men earned 14.8% more than women. Women only make up a small percentage of management roles. When compared to other industries, the difficulties faced by women in IT are unique and distinct. Gender equality increases economic growth and improves development results among the many other significant impacts. Which makes it crucial for any economy to understand the causes of gender inequality and take suitable measures.
