Standard Tonsillectomy

Tonsillectomy is one of the most commonly performed surgical operations performed worldwide. The palatine tonsils form part of Waldeyer’s ring – a group of lymphoid structures overlying musclulature within the naso- and oropharynx. Surgical removal is most commonly performed for recurrent throat infections (tonsillitis) or sleep related breathing disorders (including obstructive sleep apnoea). The surgical procedure itself involves removal of the tonsil together with its capsule, with the dissection concentrated on the peritonsillar space. A variety of tools are available to perform the surgery but, most importantly, a focus on precise surgical technique and gentle tissue handling are key to minimise complications and ensure a quick return to normal function. Serious complications, including major haemorrhage, are rare but can be life-threatening and require appropriate recognition and prompt intervention.
