Vaccines Development: Safety Aspects

The development of vaccines can be considered as one of the most challenging endeavors a company can embark on. However, basic vaccinology research and standardization of vaccine toxicology studies as well as regulatory transparency through several guidelines has aided in making accelerated vaccine development possible if required, for example, in a pandemic setting. In this chapter the reader will be introduced to the history of vaccines, historical approaches to vaccine safety followed by a presentation of the different types of vaccine technologies used today and their technology platform-specific safety concerns. In the end, the reader will be introduced to modality agnostic (non-clinical) safety assessments generally expected for novel human vaccine development.
