Gender-Based Violence in Cyberspace: An International Law Perspective

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is widely recognised as a serious violation of human rights. Such violence can result in many negative consequences, including life-threatening health and protection issues. Although anyone can be a victim of gender-based violence, females are at a higher risk. Due to the constant development of Information and Communication TechnologiesInformation and Communication Technologies (ICT), a new type of gender-based violence has emerged, namely Online Gender-Based ViolenceOnline Gender-Based Violence (OGBV). This study aims to outline the nature of gender-based violence in cyberspacecyberspace and identify visible and invisible signs of such actions. It also examines the effectiveness of the international instruments provided by the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women and GirlsViolence against Women and Girls. The paper concludes that the emergence of new technologies, including artificial intelligence, can either lead to more cyber violencecyber violence against women or to their better protection. Therefore, the key issue is how to use new technologies in cyberspace wisely.
