The Potential of Ecological Engineering: Experiences from Eastgate Complex in Harare

The climate crisis is a human crisis. It is unprecedented and one of the most critical global issues. Citizens and grassroots organizations are calling for action from the government, private sector, and consumers to combat extreme weather, disasters, and biodiversity loss. The health of people and the health of the earth are connected. Nature sequesters and stores carbon in biomass, reducing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. It also provides barriers against storm surges, stabilizes soils on slopes, prevents landslides, and provides fresh air, food, water, and boosts mood. Ecological Engineering (EE) is a nature-based solution that uses ecological processes within natural and constructed imitation of natural systems to achieve sustainable engineering goals and ecosystems with human-natural integration. The increase in population has led to the expansion of urban centers, resulting in the need for more space, water, and clean air. While urbanization is unavoidable, it can be sustainable with responsible citizenship. This chapter presents the evolution of EE in Zimbabwe, drawing from the experiences of the Eastgate Complex in Harare. The integration of biomimicry in green architecture at the Eastgate Complex demonstrates a practical application of environmental innovations for sustainable urban planning and architectural design. The broader application of EE to climate variability and change includes biodiversity conservation, although there are limitations in scaling solutions beyond local contexts due to a lack of standardized assessment and monitoring methods for wider-scale applications.
