Nature-based solutions (NbS) have acquired significance in climate policy discourses as an important solution to accelerate the mitigation and adaptation strategies to climate change. In developing countries, in particular, these solutions offer a vast potential that merits systematized treatment. In this context, this chapter studies the governance of nature-based solutions in India and the potential of these solutions in accelerating the country’s progress toward the achievement of its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the Net Zero Emissions (NZE) targets. The chapter examines three sets of questions in this regard. First, it examines the existing governance infrastructure and policies geared toward the realization of NbS, and whether the governmental interventions in the arena of NbS have been direct or incidental. Second, it examines the local community engagement with NbS, in particular looking at the nature of incentives and disincentives provided to the community to engage with NbS. Finally, the chapter examines the challenges to scaling NbS in India and the role they can play in accelerating India’s progress toward the realization of its global climate pledges.
