Integral Study of a Light Green Roof with Draining Organic Material in Gustavo A. Madero, Mexico City

The land use change and irregular settlements in Gustavo A. Madero, Mexico City, have reduced green areas and the ecosystem services they provide. The green roof is a nature-based solution that can be an answer to recover these areas, adapt cities to climate change, and improve environmental conditions despite the reduced space. The objective is to evaluate the properties and performance of an extensive lightweight green roof (LGR) placed in this municipality. The LGR design consists of applying straw as an organic drainage layer. A physicochemical characterization was performed and demonstrated that the straw retains 3.87 gH2O/gmaterial, has a pH of 5.94 and, 933.34 ppm dissolved salts, these values show that this material is suitable to be used in a green roof. More than 100% of the vegetation survived; in 22 months it was also possible to capture 1.41 × 108 ppmCO2. Insects of seven different orders were found in this new ecosystem. The results demonstrate that the LGR functions as an urban green area, on a smaller scale, and should be implemented throughout the city to extend its benefits.
