Rural people in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) face severe poverty, unemployment, and food insecurity, which is exacerbated by the growing effects of climate change (CC). This region is particularly vulnerable to climate-related hazards such as unpredictable rainfall, prolonged droughts, and extreme weather events, which threaten agriculture, food systems, and livelihoods. Climate change has devastated rural farmers, reducing crop yields, altering weather patterns, and increasing vulnerability to environmental shocks. Nature-based solutions (NBS) that harness ecosystems and biodiversity for holistic, long-term solutions are urgently needed to address these issues. Climate change can be mitigated in SSA by reviving natural habitats, introducing sustainable land management practices, and encouraging resilient agricultural systems while boosting nutrition, food security, and income. This chapter reviews the potential of NBS to improve nutrition, food security, and economic stability in rural areas of SSA. Drawing on contextual environmental and socioeconomic issues, it showcases NBS success stories through case studies, highlighting greater agricultural productivity, improved nutrition, and increased revenue. However, despite its benefits, NBS implementation faces challenges such as limited resources and policy constraints, necessitating community participation. The study motivates policy development and action by comprehensively analyzing the benefits and limitations of NBS in creating a resilient and prosperous future for vulnerable communities in SSA in the face of CC.
