As the increase in global emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and resulting global warming continues, its impacts on hydro-climatic conditions are pressing issues in various parts of the world and causing havocs ranging from biodiversity loss to creating environmental refugees in many nations. The potential roles that wetlands can play in mitigating emissions of GHGs are significant. Wetlands are found all over the world and a tremendous amount of organic carbon (C) is stored and can be stored in them. However, their roles in storing C in soils and detrital accretions for the long-term are not well elucidated. Soil and detrital C could remain stable over a long period of time in wetlands. Hence, wetlands’ management and research on stability of organic C in them not only help to reduce the atmospheric C but also help to maintain their ecological and economic services ranging from species protection to recharging groundwater and flood reductions. Although reversal of global rise of lower atmospheric temperature may not be possible in the near future, reductions in emissions of GHGs will provide the most needed time to the humanity, as well as to the numerous species to adapt to the new normal.
