Uncertainty and Modeling Climate Change Impact on the Water Balance Components in Semiarid Basin

This work investigates the four key sources of uncertainty and climate change impact on the water balance components in the Qarasou River Basin, Kermanshah, Iran, in the following steps: The results from ECHO-G under A2 and HADCM3 under A1B represent an increase in temperature in all three stations, and the rainfall changes will be different, as results indicate a decreasing trend in rainfall at the Kermanshah station and an increasing trend in the Ravansar and Eslamabad-e-Gharb stations under both A2 and A1B scenarios for the period 2011–2030. The study of climate change impact on the basin hydrology by WetSpa, IHACRES, and GR4J hydrological models indicates the high sensitivity of water balance components and discharge to climate change. The WetSpa model results show the reduction in the sum daily of all water balance components except for evapotranspiration and interception under A2 and A1B scenarios. Analysis of changes in river discharge extremes suggests that peak flows decreased during the future period in all three hydrological models under both scenarios compared to the baseline period. It is recommended to use nature-based solutions (NbS) to enhance water management and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change in study area.
