With increasing urbanization, countries face the immense challenge of developing their cities sustainably, while remaining cognizant of the adverse impacts of urbanization, such as environment degradation, energy pressures, health impacts, and mobility challenges. Given the dynamic and interconnected nature of such challenges, nature-based solutions (NbS) provide a multifunctional, inclusive, and cost-effective solution, to develop more resilient cities through the integration of nature to support or replace conventional urban systems. However, despite the uptake and diversity of NbS options worldwide, not enough steps have been taken toward integrating NbS into the city planning processes, especially in the developing world. These limitations largely arise from structural, governance, and financial concerns, especially around the costing and the governance of implementing and integrating climate action and urban planning. Given the strong contributions that NbS make for climate-resilient development, there is a need for NbS integration into policy support through national frameworks to enshrine and support NbS-based city planning into urban planning agendas. This chapter seeks to review the technical, financial, and governance contexts and synergies that can drive NbS-based city planning across the world, to identify linkages that can help adapt urban planning design and governance frameworks to align NbS into the urban planning landscape for effective and impactful implementation.
