Disaster Preparedness of Coastal Households in Bangladesh: Does Indigenous Knowledge Matter?

Climate change is a significant global issue that requires urgent attention. The occurrence of disasters linked to climate change is increasing at an alarming rate worldwide. Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries at risk from climate change. The coastal areas of Bangladesh face numerous climatic disasters, such as cyclones, storm surges, riverbank erosion, and heightened salinity. These disasters create socioeconomic, livelihood, shelter, food, and environmental vulnerabilities. Among these disasters, cyclones are more frequent on the Bangladesh coast. This study explores whether and to what extent indigenous knowledge contributes to the disaster preparedness of coastal households to cope with cyclone-induced vulnerabilities, how they face challenges in using indigenous knowledge in readiness, and what they need to practice indigenous knowledge in disaster preparedness effectively. Following a qualitative method, this study used two cyclone-affected villages as case studies. Findings show that the coastal villagers use indigenous knowledge in various sectors (e.g., housing, agriculture and fisheries, food and water, early warning and lifesaving tools) to be prepared before a cyclone. They practice raising the earthen platform of their houses and giving tana (by using rope, bamboo sticks, or trees) to protect them during cyclones. They elevate the edge of cropping land to protect tidal water and dig canals beside farming land to store rainwater for absorbing salinity. They use nets around the pond to protect fisheries from tidal water. The villagers also store and protect dry foods by using plastic drums and bags, tin-made pots, mud-made pots, and bungkars. They collect rainwater during the monsoon by using rooftop catchments and store it in small containers. They also make lifesaving tools by using plastic bottles and drums, so that they can float on water during storm surges. The study argues that indigenous knowledge has a long tradition of coping with disasters. However, only the practice of indigenous knowledge cannot build a resilient community. This study suggests that a combination of indigenous knowledge and modern technology could give a better result in preparing coastal households to overcome disaster-induced challenges and cope with associated risks. This research will enhance the current understanding of the disaster field. Additionally, it will be beneficial for policymakers, upcoming researchers, and practitioners looking to engage in this area.
