Langer’s Serotine Neoeptesicus langeri (Acosta, Poma-Urey, Ossa-López, Rivera-Páez & Ramírez-Chaves, 2021)

The species was described in 2021 by Acosta, Poma-Urey, Ossa-López, Rivera-Páez, and Ramírez-Chaves after morphological and genetic analyses of bats morphologically similar to Neoeptesicus andinus. Originally, the species was described as part of the genus Eptesicus but later moved to the recently described and controversial genus Neoeptesicus by Cláudio et al. (2023). Neoeptesicus langeri (Fig. 1) is closely related to other neotropical Neoeptesicus such as Neoeptesicus brasiliensis, Neoeptesicus chiriquinus, Neoeptesicus diminutus, Neoeptesicus furinalis, and Neoeptesicus orinocensis (Acosta et al., 2021; Ramírez-Chaves et al., 2021). There is no paleontological material available, but due to its restricted distribution in the Bolivian-Tucumanian forest, we assume an isolated speciation in this environment. Neoeptesicus langeri differs in mtDNA (CO1: cytochrome c oxidase subunit I; ND1: NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase chain 1; and Cytb: cytochrome b) from all neotropical Neoeptesicus species (Acosta et al., 2021; Ramírez-Chaves et al., 2021). The type locality is “El Cedral-Agua Rica, 15 km from the Municipality of Samaipata, Province of Florida, Department of Santa Cruz, Bolivia(−18° 13′ 10.55″ S, −63° 47′ 49.74″ W; 2020 m a.s.l.).” The holotype is an adult lactating female, preserved as skin and skull, and deposited in the mammal collection of the Museo de Historia Natural Noel Kempff Mercado (MNKM), Universidad Autónoma Gabriel René Moreno, Santa Cruz, Bolivia, with catalogue number MNKM-5584. The holotype was collected on December 01, 2013, by Luis H. Acosta, field number L. Acosta 732. No subspecies are recognized.
