Investigating the Macro and Micro Perspectives on Chinese Migrant Entrepreneurs in Ghana: A Qualitative Study

While there is existing research on Chinese migration and diaspora identities, the specific focus on the impact of the Chinese state and its nationalist policies on Chinese migrants in Ghana is less explored. This study examines how the emerging Chinese state shapes “Chineseness” among Ghanaian Chinese migrant entrepreneurs. It examines how Chinese nationalism affects immigration. Using a qualitative content analysis, this research analyses socially constructive data from semi-structured interviews with private entrepreneurs, Chinese state-owned enterprise employees, and Chinese Embassy officials in Ghana. This study also analyses media, policy, internet, and social media archival data. This study found that the expanding presence of overseas Chinese states in Ghana had unintended repercussions for private companies. The Chinese government’s and its representatives’ diaspora engagement methods and programmes also promote nationalism and territorial Chinese identity.
