ICWES-VI, Bombay, India, September 8–12, 1981

This chapter concerns ICWES-VI, held in Bombay, India, in September 1981. The conference was organized by the Indian Women Scientists Association (IWSA), under the supervision of Sumati Bhide. The main theme of the conference was “Science, Technology and Society.” Prime Minister Indira Gandhi opened the 5-day event, which was the first time an ICWES took place in Asia. Working sessions were diverse and addressed human health and the environment, as well as communication, space technology (an important development sector in India), and energy production. An “Open Forum” featured three papers on the training of women in science and engineering, their employment and working conditions in industry, and their success in higher managerial positions. The business meeting and testimonials were also included in this chapter.
