ICWES-III, Turin, Italy, September 5–12, 1971

This chapter is devoted to ICWES-III, held in Turin, Italy in September 1971. The conference was organized by Anne E. Amour, who acted as secretary of the conference. The main themes of the conference were “Planning for Progress” and “Women’s Professional & Family Duties.” The conference was inspired by the world consultation in preparation of the United Nations Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment to be held in 1972. In the S&T section of the conference, “Planning for Progress,” besides the basic needs seen previously, were Communication and Transportation, Computer Technology, Community Planning, Industrial Production, and Human Engineering. For the gender theme, “Women’s Professional and Family Duties,” topics such as the Evolution of Women’s Role and Equal Opportunities were examined. The proceedings of ICWES-III include great source material that addresses the expansion of feminism and the growth of the women’s movement during the “turbulent sixties.” Appendix 5 of this book provides Prof. Rita Levi Montalcini’s opening talk on “Women Scientists and the Woman’s Liberation Movement.” Testimonials were also included in this chapter.
