ICWES-X, Budapest, Hungary, October 8–10, 1996

This chapter is devoted to ICWES-X, held in Budapest, Hungary, in 1996. Its main theme was “Towards the Third Millennium: The Role of the Intellectual Potential in a New World.” Zsuzsa Szentgyörgyi chaired the conference. In the first S&T part, called “New Trend in Natural Sciences and Technology,” the authors presented papers on numerical and computer applications, notably in the medical field. The second part concerned the transfer of knowledge, for example, from research to industry, for business incubators, or through education. Elizabeth Laverick, the conference chair of ICWES-IX, presented an outstanding review of the previous conferences in a paper called “ICWES One to Nine.” She observed, notably, that the need to increase the participation of women in S&T was still prevailing and that the papers have provided so far “an impressive record of the growing technical contributions made by women.” At the business meeting, a pivotal amendment to the conference guidelines was adopted to the effect that the official language used for the ICWES conferences should be English, but a second language could be used at the discretion of the host country. English and French were the two official languages at the beginning of the ICWES series, following UNESCO practice. Testimonials were also included in this chapter.
