Energy Transition: Opportunities and Challenges to the Pipeline Industry

  • Edmar de Almeida

摘要

The energy transition is gaining momentum due to the global consensus on addressing climate change. Policies and commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have transformed the business landscape, with companies, including pipeline companies, needing to align their strategies with climate goals. Decarbonization policies, such as carbon markets and taxation systems, and increased scrutiny on compliance are driving change. The pipeline industry faces significant changes as the energy transition progresses. While oil and gas transportation will decrease, pipelines will be needed for low-carbon fuels and CO2. This chapter assesses the opportunities and challenges for the pipeline industry related to the energy transition. The chapter shows the need for adaptation to the new business environment, which requires integrating new energy sources, developing hybrid grids, and engaging stakeholders. Challenges include establishing technical standards and certification systems for different energy sources and investing in technology for safety. Technological innovations are crucial for hydrogen pipeline safety and corrosion-resistant materials for CO2 pipelines. Overall, the pipeline industry must adapt strategies, processes, and technologies to support the energy transition and ensure a smooth and efficient transition to low-carbon energy sources.
