Qualitative Approaches to the Study of Inequality

  • Thomas Kühn

摘要

This chapter delves into the multifaceted dynamics of social inequality through qualitative research. It acknowledges the diverse dimensions of inequality, spanning economic, political, cultural and environmental realms. Qualitative inquiry, highlighted as essential for understanding marginalised perspectives, reveals the complexities of social hierarchies and challenges dominant narratives. The chapter outlines the various approaches and theoretical perspectives within qualitative social inequality research, recognising the challenges of providing a comprehensive overview. Examples, such as life course perspectives, illustrate how qualitative research reconstructs power relations and explores social identity constructions. By foregrounding the interplay between subjectivity and power dynamics, qualitative research illuminates individuals’ navigation of privilege and marginalisation. Finally, the chapter emphasises the transformative potential of qualitative methodologies in advocating for social change and underscores the importance of transdisciplinary collaboration in addressing contemporary societal challenges.
