Understanding Health Inequality

The conceptualisation of health as wellbeing and a ‘resource for everyday life’ signifies its deep connection with the society, economy, polity, culture and environment. This chapter aims to provide a comprehensive overview of concepts, approaches and current debates surrounding health inequality, predominantly emanating from social sciences. It discusses key concepts and approaches like social and political determinants of health inequalities, equity and universality, generational and life course perspective and intersectionality that help inform the development of context-specific research and policy frameworks to understand and address health inequalities. The chapter also provides a discussion on the dimensions of health inequality and its intersections at multiple levels.
