Carbon Nanostructures Functionalization for Gas Separation Membranes

The various low-dimensional allotropes of carbon that make up carbon nanostructures are referred to as carbon black, carbon fiber, carbon nanotubes, fullerene, graphene, etc., which have unique properties. Because of their increased selectivity, permeability, and stability in corrosive and high temperature operations, gas separation membranes based on carbon nanostructures materials are becoming more important in the new era of membrane technology for gas separation. This chapter examines the various aspects of gas separation membrane such as its ultrafast permeation, remarkable mechanical properties and outstanding energy efficiency, high chemical stability, high antibacterial activity, etc., and its correlation to its carbon nanostructures. The objective is to provide insights toward improving the separation performance of carbon nanostructure-based membranes in the future, which could be highly beneficial to the industry.
