Blood Biomarkers Associated with Metabolic Syndrome: Implications for Public Health Screening

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a disease whose development involves multiple aspects, including abdominal obesity, insulin resistance (IR), dyslipidemia, and increased blood pressure, which significantly elevate the risk of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Pathophysiology of MRS is a complex of IR, chronic low-grade inflammation, and oxidative stress, with visceral adiposity and adipokine imbalance playing a significant role. Biomarkers are crucial to understanding and managing MetS with inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein and cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6) and metabolic markers (adiponectin, leptin, ghrelin). New hematological indices based on a complete blood count and lipid-related advanced biomarkers improve the capacity for a definitive diagnosis. Therapeutic opportunities exist in diet and lifestyle changes, with pharmacological agents targeting specific molecular pathways, including peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) and mitochondrial function. Biomarker-based strategies, used to inform future public health policy, will lead to new opportunities to prevent, detect, and treat MetS.
