Mediterranean Diet and Biomarkers in At-Risk Groups
摘要
The Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) is a dietary pattern rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, and healthy fats that has shown significant benefits to reduced cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. The MedDiet has demonstrated improving cardiometabolic biomarkers, such as lipid profile, blood pressure, glucose levels, and insulin resistance by lowering LDL cholesterol, enhancing HDL functionality, and mitigating systemic inflammation. Additionally, this diet has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that contribute to reducing levels of inflammatory molecules, such as C-reactive protein, interleukins, and other cytokines. The MedDiet also plays a crucial role in kidney function preservation, with studies suggesting that it slows the progression of chronic kidney disease by improving glomerular filtration rates and reducing albuminuria. In conclusion, the MedDiet can modulate several health biomarkers, playing a protective role and promoting long-term health, especially in populations at risk of CVD, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and chronic kidney disease.
