Household food security (HFS) exists when all individuals, at all times, have both physical and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their dietary requirements and food preferences for an active and healthy life. This definition emphasizes four key concepts: (1) Availability of safe food, (2) access to food, (3) sufficient consumption and utilization of food in the body (pertaining to nutritional uptake), and (4) stability (the constancy of the other three dimensions). Although numerous food security indicators have been developed for use in research, there is no agreement on the unique food security indicator for assessing, analyzing, and monitoring all the four food security dimensions food security. The major drivers of food insecurity and malnutrition—conflict, climate vulnerability, economic slowdowns and downturns, and growing inequality—frequently being in combination, is challenging our attempts to achieve the sustainable developing goals (SDGs). There are different actions and programs needed to achieve food security: (A) Increasing investment and financing, including through enhanced transnational cooperation, in rural and agricultural structure, research and extension services, technology development, and plant and livestock gene banks, (B) correcting and preventing trade restrictions and distortions in world agricultural markets, (C) adopting measures to ensure the proper functioning of markets for food commodities and their derivatives and facilitate timely access to market information, including on food stocks, in order to assist to limit the extreme fluctuation of food price, (D) promote sustainable agriculture, (E) strengthening supply chains and minimizing food waste and loss, and (F) improving the social environment and purchasing power, (G) empowering women and promoting gender equality, and (H) addressing climate change and environmental sustainability.
