Linking Nutrition and Dental Health
摘要
Poor dental health, including dental caries, periodontal diseases, and tooth loss, have high prevalence worldwide, and profoundly affect overall health. The modifiable key risk factors include excessive sugar intake, poor oral hygiene, and tobacco and alcohol use. Dental caries, the most common chronic oral disease, is driven by the high consumption of dietary sugars, which lower pH and promote tooth demineralization. Similarly, periodontal diseases are exacerbated by nutritional deficiencies, such as vitamins C, D, and calcium, which are critical for maintaining oral tissues and bone health. Emerging evidence highlights the protective effects of nutrient-rich diets, including fruits, vegetables, and dairy products, as well as probiotics on dental health. Malnutrition further weakens immune system, increasing susceptibility to dental diseases, while poor oral health can impair dietary intake and exacerbate nutritional status. Addressing dental health through well-balanced nutrition, dietary modifications, and public health interventions is crucial for reducing dental disease burden globally, and improving overall health outcomes.
