Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), defined as any non-alcoholic drink based on potable water to which sugar has been added, and 100% fruit juices contain significant amounts of free sugars (Miller et al., Nutrients 12:817, 2020). The guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO) state that the intake of these products increases overall energy consumption and can displace healthier foods from the diet, which may contribute to weight gain and an increased risk of developing non-transmissible chronic diseases (NCDs) such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2), fatty liver, and cardiovascular disease. The WHO has called for measures to reduce the consumption of SSB. Among the various measures being adopted to reduce the consumption of SSB, governments around the world have implemented an increase in SSB taxes to raise their price and discourage their consumption. The consumption of SSB is problematic due to its known metabolic effects and its health consequences (Miller et al., Nutrients 12:817, 2020).
