Lamprothamnium sardoum

This chapter gives an overview about the current state of knowledge regarding Lamprothamniun sardoum, a new charophyte species identified for the first time in 2018 on the island of Sardinia (Italy). It contains a full morphological description including identification hints and remarks on the potential risks of confusion with similar species, taking into account results of phylogenetic analyses. It also provides information on the ecological demands, phenology and on the distribution of the species in Europe. L. sardoum is currently regarded as very rare throughout the world. Potential threats to this taxon are discussed and proposals for management and conservation are presented.
