摘要

In this first chapter, the need for new kinds of biosensors to assess personal health status at the molecular level with personal bioelectronics is first highlighted. Then, the use of personal bioelectronics toward approaches for personalized therapy and precision medicine is discussed. In particular, the discussion opens the problem of monitoring the metabolism proper of each individual patient by showing the limitation of the present approach in medicine as based on statistics of patients. Therefore, the new idea of personalizing drug therapy on each individual metabolism is introduced. Of course, the use of personal bioelectronics opens the scenario of distributed diagnostics, where the diagnostic tools are spread all over, including patients’ homes. After a brief introduction to the size of the related market, the chapter closes with the new concept of the codesign of bio/nano/CMOS interfaces by also introducing a synopsis of the book.
