Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a nonprogressive neuromuscular disorder that results from injury to or abnormal development of a child’s brain before the second year of age and is the most common motor disability in childhood, presenting uncoordinated movements with the presence of spasticity. The estimated incidence is 1–3 per 1000 live births. A thorough birth and developmental history is pertinent in the clinical evaluation of a child suspected to have CP. Multidisciplinary team work will be vital to improve the quality of life and avoid complications from the pathology over the years. The aim of this chapter is to understand a complex clinical disorder in patients that represent a big challenge for orthopaedic surgeons.
