Metacarpal and Phalangeal Fractures and Fractures-Dislocations

Metacarpal and phalangeal fractures are the most common upper extremity fractures, and more than two-thirds of the fractures occur between the ages of 11 and 45. Most fractures are managed nonoperative, and the functional outcome is satisfactory. The fractures remained stable with protective splints, and early mobilization in a majority of the cases produced good results. The indication for surgical fixation depends upon various factors such as open fractures associated with soft tissue injuries, displaced and irreducible fractures and dislocations, and specific fracture locations, geometry, deformity, and fracture stability. The chapter discusses the applied anatomy, etiology, fracture classification, imaging, diagnosis, and management of metacarpal and phalangeal fractures and dislocations. Additionally, the authors’ preferred method of management is also emphasized. Management of these fractures and dislocation should avoid sequelae such as deformity, stiffness, and complications. Early mobilization and active hand therapy help achieve the goal of good functional outcomes and steer clear of hand stiffness.
