Carpal Bone Fractures

Carpal fractures have significant functional implications for patients as normal alignment of the carpus is necessary for wrist and hand motion. They are overall rare and can be the result of both low and high energy mechanisms. Prompt diagnosis is important and relies on thorough history, examination, and imaging. Cross-sectional imaging is often required for diagnosis and surgical planning, given the overlapping nature of the bones on plain radiographs. Treatment for non-displaced fractures is often closed, but most displaced carpal fractures do require surgical fixation.
