Scapular Fractures

Scapular fractures are often the result of high-energy mechanisms of injury, and they are associated with high rates of other injuries. Clearly, the early management phase will include definitive management of significant chest, head, spine, brachial plexus, abdominal, pelvic, or long bone injury picked up during resuscitation, and diagnosis is usually made later, during X-ray and CT scan taken in most trauma patients. The most common site affected is the scapular body, followed by the scapular neck and most of these fractures may be safely managed with conservative treatment and present favorable functional outcomes. However, it is important to take the necessary time to evaluate each case and not miss the opportunity to indicate surgery treatment and reduce possible sequelae in certain cases. Surgical approach, technique, and timing are individualized based on fracture type and other patient-related factors. However, there are no absolute indications for surgical treatment in these injuries.
